Lerin Islands, off Cannes

Just off of the coast of Cannes are the Lerin Islands group of which the 2 largest islands are Ile Sainte-Marguerite and Ile Saint-Honorat.  One of our favorite aspects of this adventure is the boat ride over to the islands, and back.  You get a spectacular view of the famous Cote d’Azur in all its glory and you will pass alongside some beautiful yachts too.

We usually visit Ile Sainte-Honorat as it retains a beautiful old Cistercian monk monastery, which is closed to visitors, but you can walk around and enjoy its beauty.  Also on this island, you will find an older fortified monastery, which you can visit, and it is so stunning inside – you can capture amazing light shining into old rooms and spaces.  On the roof, the view back over the island and the coast is beautiful.

You can take a picnic and enjoy it among the vineyards or along the shore.  La Tonnelle is the high-end restaurant on the island, and mind you, it is pricey, but the food is good and the views are unbeatable.  In the summer, make a reservation because it is very popular.

We like to take our swimsuits sometimes and enjoy the crystal blue waters. Ang and I have snorkeled off the shore and loved it!

The second island, Ile Sainte-Marguerite, has a very small town on it where mostly fisherman live.  This island is most famous for its fortress prison – the Fort Royal – in which, the so-called Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century.
